The Douro Region

12/05/2021

Deeply marked by the Douro River, and its tributaries - Côa, Sabor and Tua -, the territory presents in its natural and cultural heritage a full development resource. The biggest "assets" of the Douro Superior are the Alto Douro Wine Region and the Rock Art Sites of Vale do Côa, in the Vale do Côa Archaeological Park, both classified as World Heritage by UNESCO. Attractions added to the Natural Park of Douro Internacional, with an area of 85,150 hectares spread over the municipalities of Miranda do Douro, Mogadouro, Freixo de Espada à Cinta and Figueira de Castelo Rodrigo. Almond trees in bloom, a spectacle of extraordinary beauty that pronounces Spring in the Douro, is another attraction that attracts a large number of visitors and tourists. Handicrafts are rich and varied in weaving, but the highlight is silk, an activity that is still part of the day-to-day life of some (skilled) women from Freixo de Espada à Cinta.
